North Central Illinois | Seth,
You're in a tough spot. I've been in not too different of a spot, but was 10 years younger and got along well with Dad (at least as well as a HS kid can I guess). Dad died the spring I graduated HS, so that changed the picture a lot. Mom still has some cows, but she cut back a lot as soon as dad was gone. A lot easier to scale back than convince a person to get out altogether.
What you have to do is figure out the numbers the best you can on your own. That way you have a good idea of what should change to make things work financially. Perhaps push a pencil and if you and your wife want to get into the farming world on your own terms, offer to cash rent the cropland if you can pencil a profit. | |
