I have experienced the exact same thing many times. I started farming 15 years ago from nothing and would still give my hind teeth for more. But I have turned down more land than I currently farm. I have gotten the same call or heard rumors of ground available for rent and always contacted the previous tenant for their blessings. (After receiving their blessing immediately call landlord and seal the deal!). I like to think I am respected for this, or at least feel comfortable looking people in the eye at the coffee shop. Life is to short!
