had something almost the same happen to me but was farm ground that was for sale-160 acres,my friend asked me not to bid on it-as he use to rent it-lookin back probably should have bought it-it only brought 4500-today it would bring 12,000
on the other hand he is still a friend
I'm going to go completely opposite of other;s here-I would go and personally talk to the guy that use to rent it-tell him the landlord had called you-see if he knows he is not getting it again-he might just say he understands-and that he hopes you get it-if not you maned up and did everything on your end to make a uncomfortable deal best for all 3 party's-
He might(past renter) even share his yield history and problem parts of the fields with you.
Good luck,and remember next year the landlord can cancel you ,they really do not need a reason they own the ground
