Southern MN
Hi- sorry to hear about the situation with your aging parent. It appears as though TN has a 5 year lookback period for people who apply for Medicaid for long term care services. If there was an improper transfer of assets within the 5 years as of date of application, there is a transfer penalty applied meaning that the medical coverage would begin after a period of time of ineligibility, depending on the value of the asset(s) improperly transfered. There is a specific calculation for the time period of ineligibility. During that time, she would be responsible for the entire cost of care each month. In MN, all of a person's monthly income other than $99 for personal care needs, Medicare & health ins. premiums, etc go directly to the nursing home & the Medicaid helps pay the rest. The person has a $3000 asset limit in MN. It's complicated. Here is a link that may be helpful to you: https://www.seniorplanning.org/long-term-care-medicaid-eligibility/t...
Hard choices to make, especially for her. Any way you look at it, when she gets to the point of needing that type of care, tangible and sentimental things don't seem to mean as much anymore.
The guys are right about checking with an attorney or even the nursing home itself would be a good place to start. Go to the pros.
