Had to put my Dad in the nursing home in 2011.

Probably was 110 people in the facility.

Was told only 8 were paying their way. Rest were paid for by taxpayers.

My Dad was one of the 8 paying.

Really frustrated me every month when I wrote the check out of his checking account for his care.

There was some concern about the OP’s goals being dodging responsibility of paying for his Mom’s care, to those of you who have never been in his shoes you don’t know how this feels.

To the OP——good luck with the decisions you make. Try to do the best you can.


Nursing home won't necessarily own the home if it comes to that. The state will just want to be paid back in cash what they paid out, up to the value of the estate. So, the OP might have to buy the house for full market value from the estate to settle the debt.

I do find it interesting how often folks here are so adamantly opposed to a single payer health care system until they hit retirement age. Then it's great. I don't have a problem with public funding for healthcare, but we might as well just do it for everyone if we're going to go halfway down that road.
