East central Indiana
For those of you who have never served on a VOLUNTEER department. Its tough to get enough help to any run to do the job like the professionals do. Be glad that those people you talk about were able to leave there jobs, families, friends to come help you in your time of need. The department I am on in central indiana made 325 runs last year. We are only allowed 21 roster spots 5 of which are open still to this day. 3 of the other 16 firemen work for me on my farm and tile ditching business. Its tough for me to make a living or get much done on days when we have 3-5 runs during the day or we have been out all night on runs. Before you go complaining about how stupid these guys look or act. Think would you be willing to step into there shoes. If so go sign up. I dont know of any department that turns members down.

Also you should definetly have automatic transmissions in the new truck. Dont get to crazy with extras but make sure it is built to last.
