We've got a couple hoop buildings. They cost less to put up. That is their one and only + when compared to a confinement building. The feed efficiency is worse in the winter which wasn't a very big deal when corn was $2, now with $7 corn you can't afford bad feed efficiency. The death loss and cull % are both higher than a confinement building. Wasn't as big of a deal when pigs were $25-$30, with $60 pigs its a pretty big deal. Starting small pigs in a hoop in the winter time isn't much fun, for you or the pigs. They take more labor. Sorting/loading can be a real rodeo, need 3 people at the minimum. They can't be cleaned out nearly as well as a finisher which is part of the death/cull problem. Its a lot harder to hire the manure handling done so you're gonna need to buy some of that equipment. Solid manure IMO is harder to use as THE fertilizer source for a field. Gotta have bedding, gotta have a way to handle the bedding. Almost gotta have 2 people in order to get the bedding into the hoop and keep the hogs in the hoop. I wouldn't build hoop buildings if you're gonna raise commercial pork and try to compete on cost of production. Only way to make that work is with a niche market. |
