I think there is a LOT of that sort of thing going on. Guys will run parcels at a loss using cost averaging simply in order to be the biggest BTO around. About the only benefit I can see in it is spreading risk around - hail storms, localized drought, etc.
How I think - "I'd rather do nothing for nothing than something at a loss."
