Ron,

IF, IF, IF, IF corn kernels were always the exact same size in terms of dimensions or volume, then heavier kernels would translate to heavier test weight and light kernels would translate to lighter test weight. BUT, BUT, BUT, BUT corn kernels are not always identical in shape or volume. That is why kernel weight by itself is not identical to test weight.

The volume of an official test weight container is 1 quart. The number of kernels that will fill that quart container depends on the shape and volume of the kernels.

Think of small round kernels versus large rounds. More small rounds will fit into that quart container than will large rounds.

IF, IF, IF, IF the density or weight of the individual small round kernels is equal to the density or weight of the individual large round kernels, then the test weight of the small rounds will be greater than the large rounds simply because more small rounds can fit into the quart container.

IF, IF, IF, IF the density or weight of the small rounds is less than the density or weight of the large rounds, then the test weight may be identical IF, IF, IF, IF the greater number of small rounds that fit into the quart container compensates for the lighter kernel weight of the small rounds. OR, OR, OR, OR the test weight of the small rounds may indeed be lighter if the greater number of small rounds does not compensate for the lighter kernel weight.

I offer again a link to my recent article on test weight issues in corn:
