He realized that if left alone without a task I'd get into trouble so he found ways for me to have fun and learn at the same time. He was really good about explaining the how and why of mechanical things along with how that all translated to farm equipment. All the neighbor kids had four wheelers and video games while I had a set of combo wrenches and screwdrivers.

Think I was 10 or 11 when he taught me how to set up a Chrysler ring and pinion. The panzer had a Chrysler rear end and I wanted to keep up with the fourwheelers a little better so we went on an adventure to the junkyard for higher gears. He explained how we could just changed the pulleys but he had already taught me how to do that.

Above all else he let me screw things up on worthless junk instead of stopping me. He'd explain how things failed and why it happened. Those lessons are more valuable now diagnosing problems because I know what to look for when things break.
