EC ND | The beans we measured this loss on were Navy beans that had blown over in a wind storm. Navy beans are typically 2000-2200 seeds per pound so a loss of 500 pounds would be 23-25 beans per square foot. Edible beans typically set their pods much lower than soybeans so harvest losses are much greater than you would ever see in soybeans. That year was exceptionally bad for harvest loss due to the plant and most of the pods laying on the ground. In a typical year, I consider a loss of 150 pounds or less to be acceptable. The biggest issue we had with the Deere flex head was that you can set the reel close enough to the cutter bar (without chopping the reel fingers)to keep a very short crop moving through. The beans would get cut and stay on the cutterbar where they would be shredded. The air bar helped considerably, but it was still not great. With the MacDon, we can set the reel an inch or so above the cutterbar and it moves the plants in as soon as they are cut. | |
