NE Iowa | I agree. A $100 bag of non-GMO corn can be a homerun or a failure. But the same can be said about the $300 bag of SmartStax. Spending more on seed does not guarantee payback. Every seed company has winners and losers in their hybrid line-up. But a winner one year with given weather conditions might be a loser the next year. Hybrid performance varies with your particular farm's soil type and fertilizer practices also. By the time you do enough trials to determine what works on your farm the winning hybrid will be out of production. So personally I take the approach of buying whatever $100 non-GMO hybrids I think will work and bank the seed savings rather than rolling the dice that the $300 seed will yield enough to cover the extra $200 cost. | |
