Subject: Re: Seed corn genetics heading in the right direction ?

Just thinkin' out loud:

6.9oz ear x 26,000 = 179,400oz / 16 = 11,212.5 # / 56 = 200.22 bu/ac
or
5.12oz ear x 35,000 = 179,200oz / 16 = 11,200 # / 56 = 200 bu/ac

So... These are both ear sizes of less than half a pound. So if I could increase my ear size by 1.1 ounces:

8oz ear x 26,000 = 208,000oz / 16 = 13,000 # / 56 = 232.14 bu/ac

See how my wishfull thinking goes ? LoL !

I'd rather have genetics that allows me to only have 26,000 little corn factories with their accompanying root mass drawing from my soil's fertility bank rather than feeding 35,000 smaller factories trying to do the same thing. Doesn't the 35,000 use my soil's resources faster with less efficiency ? Does not the entire corn plant weigh more than the ear it produces ? If this is so, then my fertility is used to grow an increased infrastructure that produces smaller ears. Nutrients that I'd rather have in an ear of corn are being used instead to produce a mass of unnecessary fodder.

Forgive me for havin' fun with this. I'm sure I'm wrong, so I'm hoping someone will explain my backward ways.
