SE SD | If you have ears that put on an extra 2 rows around and a few rows longer yields will definitely go up. Is the fertility there at the right time to make this happen and fill the ear? As Earthworm commented a plant can put on 8 ears or more. I would like to see someone do a study on what population you need to be at to keep the second ear consistently across the field. We keep thinking we need to feed another plant to increase yield when all we need to do is keep another ear from a plant that is already there. From a seed companies perspective why would they want to have bigger ears when they can have smaller ones, show something of a yield increase and sell more seed doing it. I am not sure why we can't keep more of the second ears on the plant than we do other than nutrition. I will be doing some more investigating on this to see what it takes to keep the second ear. | |
