I'm curious. Seed companies seem to be selecting genetics that respond to higher and higher populations producing smaller ears.
Is this what you want to see as a producer ?
Why ?
This is not what I want to see as a producer. "Here" the yield potential can vary widely one year to the next. It is easier for the corn to flex up than down. A bigger plant with a little more space will root deeper in the heavy clay soil, have an ear and make it longer with heavier kernels when the weather is good if it has the genetics to flex. Over in the corn belt with deep loamy soil and a sort of high fixed yield potential climate maybe a fixed yield plant is better. I figure it is more important to always get my investment back than to occasionally have bragging rights.
