clearly increasing populations of corn plants that have increased tolerance of crowding is one way to increase yields.

The fact that this strategy has been pursued almost exclusively by industry does not mean that it is the only or optimal approach (from a biological or farmer profitability perspective).

Recent reductions in soybean populations (planted by farmers and recommended by universities) are an interesting contrast to the steady upward march in corn populations.
