SW Sask | The intention of ABS is not to improve stopping distance. In some conditions, it actually increases stopping distance. Rear wheel ABS prevents locked rear wheels from causing the vehicle to spin in a panic stop. Four wheel ABS allows you to steer during a panic stop. The idea is to be able to avoid (or reduce the severity) of a collision.
Great safety feature. Zero training for any of us (me included) to use it properly. Despite being fully aware of this, I still catch myself "freezing" in a near-panic stop sometimes, and just stomping on the brake and staring at what I think I might hit.
