I’m on the other side of things, I’m just starting a cow herd and I’m optimistic. We raise cattle, swine and chicken and direct market almost all of it. We’re just getting the flywheel turning, but pretty soon we should be operating a “birth to plate” herd as big as the OP’s herd. We’re really no farther from a major market then most of America, and our cost of production is high. Cattle make money, but you’re not a farmer your a retailer.

Personally I think that across the board farmers have accepted a silly proposition - we let the buyer dictate price, while we have limited control over production. This is why I sell retail. I base my production off of a sales forecast, and shoot low, I’ll always sell everything for the price I want, not the price I’m offered.
