Thanks for your reply. Most of the hay ground could be farmed. My opportunity cost is 72 bushel per acre. Any yield over that is more profitable as corn rather than hay. It’s not prime land, but it should be at least 120 bushel corn production. The pasture I own could be rented out.


any ground a planter can be drug across goes to insurable row crops, cows live on the ground you can't farm and live off the byproducts of the row crops, stalks and fire sales on gluten. when you manage your genetics for the feedlot and deliver fats on yield and grade it makes it worthwhile running the cows. Feeding calves from guys who have managed their genetics and calves well also works good once you have an idea how they will perform. I don't see how it is worth it for the guys who run sale barn cows and sell feeders at the salebarn, those tend to be the cowboys who do it to drive the big truck and sport the belt buckle.
