Wow. My head is spinning a little after reading all the comments. Maybe your wife should ask her dad and brothers to not talk to the land lord because she knows her husband is interested in the farm. If you won't be farming your in laws ground, I would NOT act spitefully, but we would be competitors. That is business. If your wife has a problem with it, you have bigger problems.

I don't know the size of your farm. Are you a large BTO, have more than you need, and really don't need anymore ground, AND is her family struggling to be an economic unit because they are too small? That is the only situation that might change my mind.

But again as stated, there is no guarantee that if you don't try that your in laws get it. Go for it. Talk about everything besides farmland at Thanksgiving dinner
