Boy, that's a tough one. I guess the answer partially lies with how much do you want to keep the wife happy. That said, sounds like you have dibs to me.
Edit: If you DO go to the owner about the ground, skip asking your wife to go with you. Don't hide it necessarily, just don't emphasize it.
