I've known a few Superintendents. I've never known any of them to not put in many more hours than 40 a week. Someone mentioned 70 here, and I wouldn't think that was out of line . Also, certainly none of them get 3 months a year off. No idea why anyone would think thats factual.

Our small rural schools with declining enrollment have commonly asked the Superintendent (or the Superintendent has suggested it) to take on additional duties. Or school had a superintendent who also was the transportation director. One also acted as a elementary principal for a while. That kind of sounds like a good idea at first flush, but in reality it didn't work as well as expected. I know some school districts are sharing superintendents now, that seems to work well from what I can tell.
