Subject: RE: Superintendent salaries

The thing that fries me is how often the govt agencies pay an outside firm to study their wage structure and compare it to "equal" sized cities. They seldom come back with a recommendation to lower wages, always talk about putting wages in the top tier otherwise talented individuals "might" leave. If employees/mgmt are leaving then yes it makes sense to evaluate why they are leaving. But if few employees/mgmt have left then why is it so important to push wages/benefits to levels being paid somewhere else. Maybe those other cities have to pay higher wages in order to get someone to relocate there versus maybe our city is a nice place to live if a person is getting an adequate wage. Perhaps they should pay a firm to study how we can get more work out of employees/mgmt for less money...maybe by sharing workloads/sharing mgmt including school mgmt or school maintenance with other nearby cities. Clearly there are people including mgmt who are way better than others, I get that. Perhaps it makes more sense to hire the best mgmt--increase the salary but spread their responsibility over similar tasks such as sharing one superintendent over 10 or 20 schools for example.
