Pat , IMO it is because the engineering , and other technical degrees take much more work and higher aptitude(IQ) to obtain.
I still remember when I was visiting and chatting with a girl who attended a teachers college while I was in engineering
school. I mentioned I was taking advanced calculus and she said I am taking a math course also. So I asked what math course she was taking. She replied , "Roman Numerals". That is the difference.
