 Chebanse, IL..... | Thinking back of friends/neighbors of all professions that I've lost in the past 10 years, I will DISAGREE with the fact that farmers have a higher rate of cancer. Maybe it's just a "here" thing. Though habits have changed in this generation, also consider the numbers include older generations that smoked heavily. As a kid growing up, I can't think of a single farmer neighbor that did NOT smoke. Can't think of any that do today. When I went in the Army in 1968 with a huge cross-section of America, I'd say a large majority of soldiers smoked. I sold my cigarette rations every month. The income helped. To me, smoking causes more cancer than pesticides. Pesticides can be handled safely, but can smoking? So, where does lung cancer fit in the farmer cancer equation?
I disagree with the "farmers (?) have a 30% higher cancer rate...." statement. |
