What's stopping a bunch of these mechanics from walking off and starting their own shop and charging $50-60/hr and putting it all in their pocket?  I suppose the biggest one is the day they quit they lose their computer and all the software they need to work on anything built after 1995.  That and training classes.  Still, I would think a good mechanic could make a much better living going out on their own and just taking the more mechanical projects.



Doing so means absorbing many of the same overhead costs as the dealership, which eats into that $50-$60/hr pretty quickly. Before long, you're making the same as the dealership techs, but you've given up the group health plan.
