That's what a friend of mine did. Bought a 1 ton service truck and went out on his own. Charges $6 a mile one way and $50/hour. He does all the work on your farm and charges the parts through the dealerships to the individual farmers accounts so he doesn't get stuck if someone refuses to pay. You have to schedule almost a month in advance because he's so busy.

I know guys who have done this too...but you must realize that his business has been HEAVILY subsidized by a dealer at some point as his education and experience were all gained on someone's dime.

Can you imagine if every experienced mechanic did this? They all get trained from the dealer...go to all the classes etc, get 10 or 15 years of experience and then when their talent is up to the task...they leave.

Not saying it is wrong...just remember that a large portion of education was free.

If you tried it that way right out of school...you would have a lot of jobs come back that you would be fixing for free as you do not have the experience...or it would take you far longer as you don't have the knowledge and you might not be able to bill all your hours as you might be spending alot of time in a book or computer.
