What's stopping a bunch of these mechanics from walking off and starting their own shop and charging $50-60/hr and putting it all in their pocket?  I suppose the biggest one is the day they quit they lose their computer and all the software they need to work on anything built after 1995.  That and training classes.  Still, I would think a good mechanic could make a much better living going out on their own and just taking the more mechanical projects.

Read denny's post again.

It is not that easy.

Has anybody ever called the service manger and talked to him for 15 minutes to help with a problem for free??
How does that get paid?

The service manager has to be paid and yet he does no work that get directly billed to a job. It is all overhead necessaary to the business that costs money.
