Driftless SW Wisconsin

I do understand what you saying - that there have been reasons buyers bid higher for a pot of black hided calves than others based on the buyers experience on the rail. I don't refute that.

And my small herd isn't likely to change anything.  With all the emphasis on black cows for the past few decades change will come very slowly as does everything having to do with raising cattle.

If and when I do sell a few calves at the sale barn I would hope they would be judged on their own merits rather than lumped into these decades old perceptions.

Russ' article indicates there is and will be a shortage of calves for the feedlots. I would hope that as calf numbers get shorter that buyers will bid more on merits of the calves rather than just across the board discounts for hide color. Herefords and I suspect Hereford crosses, have some traits which really lend themselves to lower input production systems.

If buyers are able to do this they just might find they are pleasantly surprised and have a larger pool of calves to choose from.  In some areas bwf or rwf calves are starting to get the same bids as blacks.

Thanks for the thoughtful post.
