Southern IA
fact: The better return to a cow-calf operation, the more expansion, the more calves will be available.

That article is nothing more than a feedlot owner complaining that the old days up and left and he still wants to operate the old way. Forage has been used forever to grow calves for feedlots, whether grazing or backgrounding lots. The author wants cheap corn and cheap calves again. A new paradigm has arrived. High cost corn/energy and high cost feeder calves, as cows are competing for the same land base as energy is and newer generation farmers aren't running as many small herds in the timber ground for his order buyer to put together cheap loads of lightweights for him. If farmers are going to go out everyday and feed cows they want a little profit for it and that is finally what we are getting the past few years.
