Whats the point of preplant even half of Nitrogen in corn?

Guess it's going to really help be low-cost producers for those people who got their NH3 on but never will get it planted this year.****  

Not saying it's easy to get done in the mud, but the amount of equipment that is available to do a Plan B, Plan C or Plan D with nitrogen is vastly greater than 1993.  How many farmers back then owned high clearance urea spreaders, or 16+ row sidedress bars, or self propelled sprayers capable of running drops 60' at a pass? 

And at least in our soils "here" if it's so godawful muddy for so long that you can't even get through it with a 4WD sprayer at some point in the next 60 days after planting, it's probably a crop insurance claim yield level no matter what your nitrogen plan was.
