Because that's the way dad did it and it's easy to one and done in the spring or fall and check the box off for the year, good bad or otherwise.
For the record I agree with you. I'm a firm believer in side dress and banded nutrition on the planter. We put 10 gal thiosulfate, 5 gal of 32 out the back on the planter and come back with 150-250 lbs of urea depending on nitrate tests
