South Dakota
The real answer especially with absentee management is calve them together in sync with mother nature. Breed them around the fall equinox, September 22-23. Or a few days before. Mom can be on green grass a few weeks before calving. This will drastically reduce distocia, death loss and the winter feed bill. Herefords will fit very well. Traditional ranchers want a heavy weaning weight, but that is offset by number of live calves, price per pound, cost of winter feed, shelter and additional labor. See anything written by Jim Gerrish, Kit Pharo, Chip Hines and many others. One place to start: http://www.pharocattle.com/ Click on Philosophies. Many will disagree with me.
