South Dakota | The real answer especially with absentee management is calve them together in sync with mother nature. Breed them around the fall equinox, September 22-23. Or a few days before. Mom can be on green grass a few weeks before calving. This will drastically reduce distocia, death loss and the winter feed bill. Herefords will fit very well. Traditional ranchers want a heavy weaning weight, but that is offset by number of live calves, price per pound, cost of winter feed, shelter and additional labor.
