Eastern Iowa | No reason to calve them early if you aren't going to be there to monitor their progress. We start heifers first because we like to have the time to make sure they are doing OK, which isn't always the case when the spring gets farther along and the rest of the cows, and the corn and beans come into play.
In terms of mothering ability across breeds, I agree with my vet who has concluded that there is as much or more variability within breeds for this kind of thing than there are between them. That said, sometime sh*t happens. Don't waste another year on the cow, fatten her up and sell her.
