west central Iowa | We calve silmilar to T-boss. The cows calve for a good 2 weeks before any heifers start. 1. The heifer is a little older and 2. Everyone is usually up to speed by then! It seems like it takes myself, the kids, and the cows a little bit to get into the routine of calving. Its always nice to have some easy calving older cows go first. They know what to do and where to get the calf if the weather is bad. As far as the calf not sucking, that is a tough one. A couple years ago I worked with a calf for over a week and it still died. At times I wonder if they are wired correctly! It seems like the more you have to work with a heifer, the more she remembers it next year.
Hope the rest of your calving goes well, and you get your fancy heifer home from N Dakota safe and sound!
