Aberdeen MS | A farmer got "displaced" by a new road in southern MN (this was back in the 60's), took his windfall and moved to my local area. did some expanding on acreage, but he was pretty much the textbook description of today's BTO.
An older farmer had passed from health conditions, and the 120 acre farm was up for auction. The above was said to make the remark that he would let all the "kids" have their fun and then the "men" could get to work.
The older brother partnership that was across the road from that farm sat dead center middle front row in front of the auctioneer. They put in the first bid and raised their hand last. The BTO never even came out of the shadows from the back of the room.
This sale was around 10-15 yrs ago, the buyers still do most of their farming with a 4020 and smaller equipment. Not unusual at all for them to be fighting snow and freeze up in the fall to get things done.
Always was said that they just went to the grove, took the tops off a couple milk cans, skimmed some cream off the top to buy that farm. | |
