Although it's not widely used in the south, my parents taught me that Sir and Ma'am was a sign of respect. But many here, mostly women from my experience, view it as someone calling them old or being sarcastic and disrespectful. Lived in Michigan my whole life and everyone says it's a regional thing but I don't get that.
