When my sister and her husband moved to MS a long time ago, I noticed that all the neighbor kids that came to their house said Sir or Ma'am. They also said hi Mr. Sheridan or Mrs. Sheridan. This was to show respect.
What's wrong with addressing someone as 'Sir' or 'Ma'am'?
