SW Saskatchewan | When we started wintering in Texas, it was a shock to hear men all addressed as "Sir". At first it was jarring to my Canadian ears which put a high value on equality but I was willing to accept it as a part of the military service of many Americans.
Ma'am had always been a part of our regional speech as respect for women. My wife who had been raised in a city had always objected to my use of it as being "hillbilly" but I persisted anyway.
To make a long story short, Texas hospitality and good manners has us both using Sir and Ma'am now when using the Canadian "Thank you" when receiving service. When in Canada I hear myself using the terms but so far no one has objected, and if one person who has done something for me feels better because he feels appreciated, it was worth it.
