I always say ma'am and sir, and if someone complains I usually say "sorry" followed by a quick "it is nothing more than a sign of respect, nothing to do with age". It is respect and some people need to learn to take and give respect better, I feel we have become too informal at times.
What's wrong with addressing someone as 'Sir' or 'Ma'am'?
