My parents taught us to use ma'am and sir when addressing our elders. My wife and I taught our kids and grandkids to do the same. I've had many people tell me how polite the kids are. But, a lot of it is regional or rural I believe.
What's wrong with addressing someone as 'Sir' or 'Ma'am'?
