I would say 3rd grade is too young. My kids aren't to that age yet. I played from 4th grade through 8th grade on traveling team. Got burnt out, didn't even play basketball in high school. Played a lot of pick up ball in college and still play 1 night a week in the winter. I love basketball. Its one thing to play 1 weekend a month, but to play 3-4 and all the travel, it was a lot.
