west central Iowa | When both my sons were showing wed break 10-15 head every year, usually 6 at a time. We had 6 old halters we'd put on and let then drag the lead ropes for a few days. This is well worth it as they fight much less when you do tie them up. Then while they were tied up they got led to feed and water. Usually doesn't take very long for them to figure it out. We have never got around to it but some people will put a group of calves in their runway leading up to the chute and brush on them and work with them to calm them down before they halter them. If you have another calf to put with the one the you're breaking it might keep him calmer. | |
