Follow this advice about leading to water as a reward. We have broken some 1000# steers this way. I would recommend starting sooner next year, but if you want to show this will work.
I would also skip the washing or brushing until you can handle the calf. Being that close to a calf just tied up is a good way to get hurt. Be careful.
