It flies the direction of the longest section after it breaks. If its a 30ft chain and peaks dead center, its going both ways with 15ft. If it breaks a foot from one end you have a foot flying one way and 29ft flying the other way. Laws of potential energy apply. If you have 30 tons of pressure on the chain and it breaks you end up with q5 tons of energy going opposite directions.
