I have pulled many things with a 3/8 chain without incident. As stated above, "use common sense". EASE into it. DON'T jerk. One thing I always due if possible is double the chain. This is easier than lugging a 1/2' or 5/8" chain. Not sure, but I would guess a 3/8 doubled would pull as much a a 1/2' single.
