Yes, they can go either way. My Dad was using a tractor to pull a stuck loaded grain truck. The chain broke and it whipped back to destroy the truck windshield. The link that failed took out the radiator and timing chain cover on the truck engine. luckily, no one was hurt. I can't imagine what that broken link would to a person.
