Southeast Colorado | Well..........first off, in my original post I stated that I decided skip row didn't work here. It seems like most of the testing and success on skip row occurs north of I-70. I think it has to do with evaporation rates being worse as you move south. Admittedly my own farm tests were not scientific so I won't go so far as to tell everyone else that skip row won't work for them. I just know what I observed here over the course of 4 years of trying. And I really wanted it to work because I realize year in and year out we aren't dryland corn country.
When it comes to populations..........some guys here are blocking off every other hole on their seed plate. I think it has more to do with running a hydraulic drive. Some of those give trouble when you aren't turning them fast enough. I never had trouble with my 30" planter but haven't attempted dropping less than 11k population. On 20s you'd certainly have to slow it way down. With skip row or wider rows that would certainly help. | |
