SW TX PANHANDLE | I have quite a bit of experience in this 20 vs 30” debate, also see that we are not geographically far apart. We grew 20” corn and milo stating in 1998. Definitely like both in 20s over 30s in our climate. Went to 30” rows about 4-5 years ago because it was a pain trying to do grain on 20s and cotton differently. Did grow cotton on 20s one year and it was the highest yielding we ever had, but a major pain in the ass to harvest, had an old broadcast s&h header. Very slow harvest and need really clean ground or u will be plugged up all day. Had 20” dryland milo many different years and liked it. The only negative I can think of on the corn is that it doesn’t stand as well as 30s. Another major reason we quit was we are notill now and 30s are easier to get through tougher residue. If I wasn’t ever going to grow cotton again I would probably go back to 20”. Still have two really nice 12 row corn heads in the barn. | |
