South Georgia
I'm skeptical of the idea that a bunch of wear is caused at each startup. Maybe so at each COLD startup, but if it was tht case at a hot startup, there'd be a lot of these auto start-stop engines failing prematurely by now, and I haven't heard of that.

Idling wastes fuel. How much? I'm not sure exactly, but more than most folks realize. I have a 12vdc electric air compressor on my truck, and in the summertime when I use it a lot with the truck is idling, it's the difference in 13 mpg and 11 mpg on a tank. That's a big percentage.

Also for the folks who like to leave things idling for no reason, I guess they've never seen a water pump fail catastrophically? I'm not that old, but I've seen it a couple times now. They can dump a lot of water in a hurry.
